Practical, calm guidance for families and educators supporting a student before and after CogAT testing.
Most children do best when adults keep the assessment in perspective. CogAT results can add useful information about reasoning strengths, but they are only one part of a student’s educational story.
Before the test
Explain the schedule in simple language, practice a few original examples, and protect normal routines for sleep, food, and school.
On test day
Keep the morning predictable. Remind the student to listen to directions, try each problem, and move on when a question feels difficult.
After results arrive
Look at score patterns and local context. Ask the school what measures were considered and what instructional next steps are available.

Questions worth asking your school
- Which CogAT level and form will be used?
- How does the school use CogAT results?
- What other information is considered for gifted identification?
- How and when will families receive score reports?
- Can students be reconsidered later if they do not qualify now?
- What classroom support is available for different reasoning profiles?
Local rules matter: Testing procedures and gifted-program eligibility vary. Your school or district is the authoritative source for its own policies.
