How CogAT levels relate to grades
A CogAT level identifies the assessment level and its item formats; it is not a score or performance label. Level 8 is commonly used in Grade 2, Level 9 in Grade 3, and Level 10 in Grade 4. Riverside Insights' level-selection guidance also allows adjacent levels in some circumstances, especially for high-performing groups or particular testing seasons.
Auto-assignment based on rostered grade and testing season is the typical school workflow. A district may instead make a deliberate off-level assignment. Parents should therefore confirm the level on the school notice or score report rather than assuming it from grade alone.
CogAT Level 8: commonly Grade 2
Level 8 is the final primary-level format. With the exception of how Sentence Completion is administered, the tasks are picture-based and do not require the student to read. Students reason with pictures, beads, quantities, geometric figures, and spoken directions.

CogAT Level 9: commonly Grade 3
Level 9 introduces the upper-level word- and number-based formats. Picture Analogies becomes Verbal Analogies, Picture Classification becomes Verbal Classification, and quantitative tasks begin presenting numbers more directly. The Nonverbal Battery retains its three spatial subtest names.
This Level 8-to-9 transition matters when choosing practice, particularly for students who are still developing English reading fluency. Practice should introduce the format without reproducing secure test questions.
CogAT Level 10: commonly Grade 4
Level 10 continues the upper-level formats used at Level 9. The batteries and subtest names remain Verbal Analogies, Sentence Completion, Verbal Classification; Number Analogies, Number Puzzles, Number Series; and Figure Matrices, Paper Folding, Figure Classification. Reasoning difficulty and language are calibrated for the level.
