CogAT Test Explained: Format, Question Types & Sample Questions

7 minutes 36 seconds · English · Published October 14, 2026 · Watch on YouTube

Watch a CogAT overview covering the verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal batteries, test levels, and six original practice examples with clear reasoning explanations.

What you will learn in this video

  • What the Cognitive Abilities Test measures.
  • How the three batteries organize nine subtests in the complete assessment.
  • How test levels relate to typical ages and grades; confirm the actual assignment with the school.
  • Six original practice examples, followed by explanations and practical reasoning habits.

How to use the practice examples

Watch the introduction to understand the assessment, then pause at each sample question. Try a solution before continuing to the explanation. Name the rule you used and check whether it fits every part of the question.

Parents can watch together with their child and ask, “What changed?” or “How did you choose that answer?” Keep practice short and calm. These examples introduce reasoning strategies; they do not predict a test score.

CogAT question types shown

Picture analogies and classification

Use the relationship between two pictures to complete an analogy. For classification, name what the examples share before choosing another member of the group.

Number analogies and series

Compare number pairs to find a consistent operation. For a series, check each step rather than guessing from the final two numbers.

Figure matrices

Track what changes and what stays the same, such as shape, color, and size. Apply the same transformation to the missing part.

Paper folding

Imagine opening the folded paper. The fold acts as a mirror line, so a hole punched through two layers appears in two matching positions.
